Fleet Training & Risk Assessment

Your Company’s Driving Risks


Driving For Work not only carries an obligation to drive safely and within the law, but is also a high risk occupation in its own right.

  • Business drives are 30–40% more likely to be involved in a collision than a domestic driver.
  • The number of road deaths in Britain is the equivalent of one World Trade Centre 9⁄11 tragedy occuring every year.
  • Driving For Work related road collisions are the biggest cause of work related accidents related deaths. Between 800–1000 people are killed annually in work–related collisions compared to approximately 250 fatalities due to accidents notified annually under the Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Ocurrances Regulations (RIDDOR).
  • About 300 people are killed each year as a result of drivers falling asleep at the wheel. About 4 in 10 tiredness–related crashes involved someone in a commercial vehicle Driving For Work.
  • More than 95% of traffic collisions involve human error.
  • You are 4 times more likely to be involved in a collision while Driving and Using a Mobile Phone.

With 3 Million Company Vehicle drivers, and over 5 Million who use their own vehicles when Driving For Work, do you understand your corporate responsibility?

Seven people die every day on our roads and a further seventy are seriously injured. Around a third of them are people who are on work related business. 95% of collisions are human error. Taking the right action now can help drive this risk down.

With the recent revisions to corporate manslaughter bill, the ‘duty of care’ that companies have to their employees should now be high on your agenda. If it isn’t on your list of priorities you may need to ask yourself why? Too many companies are choosing to act after the event. The costs then turn into more than just driver training.

This applies not just to company vehicle drivers, but also to car allowance and own vehicle casual users. However, only a few organisations have already:

  • Undertaken a comprehensive health & safety assessment to minimise occupational road risk – even though Health and Safety Legislation requires it.
  • Put occupational road risk issues on the board agenda – even though board members themselves may be personally liable.
  • Have a road risk reduction programme – even though their staff are at risk every day and the existing costs are often substantial

THE CORPORATE MANSLAUGTHER ACT 2007

  • Should someone who is driving on your behalf be involved in a fatal road traffic crash, managers as well as the company could be investigated by the Health and Safety Executive and⁄or the Police for not only a breach of health and safety, but possibly a conviction for Corporate Manslaughter.
  • This could include a heavy fine of up to 10% of the company’s annual turnover and possibly even a prison sentence.

THE SAVINGS ATTRIBUTABLE TO A RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME


  • A reduction in insurance premiums of at least 15% depending on previous claims record, fleet size and composition at a time when insurance premiums are escalating at the rate of 20–30% annually.
  • Fuel consumption improvements of at least 7–10%
  • Reductions of around 6% in wear and tear on tyres, brakes and clutches etc.
  • Improved vehicle residual value if a trained driver drives the car.
  • Driver training can typically reduce fleet costs by up to 20% in the first year.

Your Legal Responsibility

  • The Health and Safety At Work Act 1974 requires you to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all employees while at work.
  • You need to carry out a Health and Safety Risk Assessment of your employees, while they are at work.
  • The HSE has defined that the vehicle is a workplace if used in the course of an employee’s working day.
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 states you have a responsibility to manage health and safety effectively.
