Young Driver Safety

This page provides details of two post–test driver training schemes, these being Get in Gear and Pass Plus.

Driving instructors within Bucks and Oxon Driver Training has been specially selected to deliver training for the National Road Safety Award nominated Get in Gear young driver training programme.

Get in Gear is a Buckinghamshire County Council road safety initiative for young drivers. It is an advanced driver training course that is available to all young drivers who live within the Bucks County Council Local Authority area aged between 17 and 24–years and who have passed their driving test within the past 12–months.

Why Get in Gear and Not Pass Plus?

As a result of significant research, the Get in Gear young driver training course has been developed to specifically target road collision statistics within this vulnerable drivers’ group relative to the circumstances and type of road environment in which collisions most commonly occur. The programme is delivered by a small yet specially trained and hand–picked team of instructors, who themselves have achieved respected qualifications in advanced driving methods.

In short, Get in Gear provides targeted input and is a more intelligent form of young driver post–test training.

Driving Course Format

Get in Gear is a 6–hour advanced driving course made up of a 2–hour group theory presentation and 4–hours practical driver training. The practical modules are split into 2x 2–hour sessions, one providing driver training on rural roads and the other on fast roads (motorways and high–speed dual carriageways).

Enrolment onto the course always takes place at the theory sessions and these are held at regular intervals around the Buckinghamshire County and various venues. Schools and colleges can get involved by hosting theory sessions, after which course students will complete the practical modules of the course outside school hours.

Cheaper Car Insurance

Young drivers who successfully complete the Get in Gear driving course will be awarded a certificate and will then have access to some special discount car insurance options.

For further information, and to book your place on the next driving course, please visit the Get in Gear website.

The Get in Gear driving course is currently provided FREE OF CHARGE,
so hurry whilst places are still available.

Sorry Oxfordshire young drivers, the Get in Gear advanced driving course is not currently available to you. Talk to your Local Authority Road Safety Team and apply pressure to have this great scheme made available in your area. In the meantime, Bucks and Oxon Driver Training can deliver the DSA Pass Plus Scheme, but in a fun and more interesting way than with an average driving instructor.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the road charity, BRAKE, and various insurance companies, encourage young drivers to continue with training after passing the driving test.

Pass Plus is a post–test driving course is another service that is offered by Bucks and Oxon Driver Training and on behalf of the DSA. The aim is to reduce the risk of those young drivers completing the course being involved in a road traffic collision and becoming another statistic.

Many insurance companies will allow discount against the cost of your car insurance, following the successful completion of the Pass Plus course. The money spent on the course, when off–set against the cost of motor insurance, may pay for a substantial part of the course fees.

Pass Plus Course Modules

There are 6–hours of driving tuition involved with the Pass Plus programme, and the subjects it covers include night driving and motorways, as well as how to deal with country roads and town driving.

Is There Another Driving Test?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to sit another test! The decision as to whether you should be awarded a Pass Plus certificate will be the decision of your registered Pass Plus instructor, who can sign you off for each section of the course. Your certificate is sent to you from the DSA to prove you have successfully completed the course. For further information, visit Pass Plus Website.

General Information

  • New drivers are 4x more likely to be involved in a driving incident in the first 2–years of their driving career. With the first 6–months being the most vulnerable.
  • The New Drivers Act means, should you obtain 6–points on your licence within the first two years, your full licence entitlement will be revoked and you will revert back to a learner driver once more. That means retaking the Theory and Practical driving tests all over again.

Do You Know?

SLOW painted on the road stands for, Speed Low Observe Warning. At least one person will have been invovled
in a SERIOUS road collision for SLOW signs to be painted on the road surface. (It’s not pro–active!)
